So, I have been through the four stages of Sutent:
1. Yucky
2. Yuckier Still
3. Yucky with sore feet
4. Fine.
Week one was just a run through of mild nausea and fatigue. Week two,
fatigue, but the kind you can deal with, not near the naps I went through
with Nexavar (yeah, I gotta admit, that part I kinda miss, especially when
its cool enough for Gracie, my Brittany and not a girlfriend, to nap with
me). Week three the feet began to hurt and toothpaste was unbearable; Week
four send in the sedan and bearers. Then, off the pill and a day later I can
walk, chew gum, take pictures and be my regular old obnoxious self all over
again.
Now I am on a two-week hiatus, the doctor has reassured me yet again this
cancer is not going to kill me and I get to deal with writer's block for the
November issue of Gray's (story about a Carolina Bay and how a long abused
habitat remains an unconquerable domain of most every animal that lives in
the Southeast, nice story of love for the world and all the creatures in it
in a hunting magazine. But the deer still dies and comes to my house to help
nurture us, thus is the irony of the wilderness world.).
I stress again that dying from this cancer is, according to the experts, no
longer an option (I'm even gaining some weight, but that is because about
all I can eat during periods one through three is bread). I told the doctors
that last year, but they figured I was just a blow hard. Ha! The only thing
I have in common with Don Quixote is we both like horses, though I enjoy
mules a bit more.
As for the hurting feet, I can handle anything physical for two weeks out of
a month as I am also the father a 17 year-old-girl and thusly caught between
the (as Bill Cosby so aptly said) brain-damaged child and her mother. Give
me hoof disease any day; hell, cut both feet off. However, as with the
cancer, come another three or four years she will find her brain, become a
real person and I can tell her mother I told her so. (OK, I would never do
that, but I like the idea of it. Please, please, do not mention that to
Sherry.)
God bless you all for all the support. I will let Sutent have its way with
me for another two or three months and then another update.
Love you all in many more ways than one,
Dave
